After an exciting first round at the 2025 WAFCON, it’s becoming clearer who the real title contenders are. And make no mistake — Zambia and Morocco are leading the charge.
Here’s a quick ranking of the top five teams based on their opening performances:
5. Senegal
Yes, Senegal smashed DR Congo 4-0 — but let’s be honest, it wasn’t as impressive as it sounds. Congo were all nerves in the opening 20 minutes, and Senegal pounced. But will they get that kind of easy ride again? Not with teams like Zambia and Morocco waiting. That win made a statement, sure, but not one loud enough to shout “champions.”
4. Nigeria
The Super Falcons may have nine titles, but their 3-0 win over Tunisia was far from dominant. Nigeria looked off-pace, uncoordinated, and at times surprisingly sloppy in midfield. They may win their group, but one real test against a high-pressing side like Morocco, and they could come undone.
3. South Africa
The Banyana Banyana showed flashes of brilliance against Ghana — clinical and clever in attack. But that spark dimmed quickly in their second game against Tunisia. They looked flat, passive, and strangely uninspired. If they carry that attitude into a clash with Zambia, they’ll be in for a rude awakening.
2. Zambia
Zambia drew 1-1 with hosts Morocco, but the performance was anything but equal. For long spells, the Copper Queens dominated — pinning Morocco back and disrupting their rhythm. Zambia showed heart, discipline, hunger, and real physical presence. It was only a late equaliser that denied them a deserved win. If they keep this energy, they’ll go deep into the tournament.
1. Morocco
Morocco holds the top spot for now. They matched Zambia’s intensity, driven by a passionate home crowd and strong tactical discipline. Their determination not to lose at home showed the depth of their ambition. A rematch between these two giants in the final? Very possible — and we’re here for it.
