The Most Expensive Football Transfers of the Last Decade

The Most Expensive Football Transfers of the Last Decade include names like Emmanuel Mayuka from Zambia and other international players like Neymar, Philippe Coutinho

Emmanuel Mayuka was one of the most expensive Zambian footballers ever. He made his senior debut at the Kabwe Warriors in 2006, then transferred to Israel, and Switzerland, ultimately ending up at the English Premier League team Southampton in 2012. Although his transfer fee was not disclosed, reports speak of £3 million (around ZMW57 million today), making him one of the most expensive Zambian players in history. Still, this stellar transfer fee pales in comparison to last year’s most expensive players who switched teams in the last decade.

5. Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool to Barcelona, 2018)

Brazilian attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho made his debut at the Italian team Inter Milan in 2008, spending four years there (two of them on loan at various Spanish teams) before moving to England to play with the Premier League side Liverpool in 2013. After five years with the team, he moved again – this time to the Catalan football powerhouse Barcelona. His addition to Barca’s lineup definitely shifted the Betway soccer betting odds toward them, especially considering the amount paid by the team to have him: €120 million (ZMW1.9 billion today).

4. Antoine Griezmann (Atlético Madrid to Barcelona, 2019)

Griezmann, a French national, spent his entire professional career at Spanish football teams. He made his senior debut at Real Sociedad in 1997, then moved to Atlético Madrid in 2014. Five years later, the time has come for him to switch teams again: he left Madrid for Barcelona in a transfer worth €120 million (ZMW1.9 billion today).

3. João Félix (Benfica to Atlético Madrid, 2019)

Félix was just 19 years old when Atlético signed him over from the Portuguese team Benfica in 2019 but his record has already confirmed his worth: in just 26 league games for the Portuguese team, he scored 15 times. His transfer fee was up to his value, though: Atlético paid €126 million (ZMW2.02 billion) to have him.

2. Kylian Mbappé (Monaco to Paris Saint Germain, 2018)

When he left Monaco for PSG, Mbappé – the son of an Algerian former handball player and a Cameroonian football coach – has already stood out: he became the second teenage player to score in a World Cup final (after Brazilian football legend Pelé). As you might expect, his transfer fee was also out of the ordinary: PSG paid €135 million (almost ZMW2.2 billion) to have him.

1. Neymar (Barcelona to Paris Saint Germain, 2017)

The most expensive football player in the world (so far) is none other than Brazilian football legend Neymar. He is widely considered one of the greatest footballers ever to have stepped on the turf, his transfer fee was indeed high (but it seems to have worth it for PSG): a world record-breaking €222 million (ZMW3.57 billion).
