Zambia Enters WAFCON2024: It’s 6 days now to go, and as the countdown to the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) continues, the brush at FIFA rankings reveals Zambia’s position among the continent’s best.
The Copper Queens head into the tournament ranked 65th in the world and 5th in Africa, according to the updated standings.
Only four African nations are currently ranked above Zambia: Nigeria (36th), South Africa (54th), Morocco (60th), and Cameroon (64th). This places Zambia just behind some of the traditional powerhouses of African women’s football and ahead of other strong sides such as Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal.
The ranking levels are at a time when Zambia is building a solid reputation on the international stage. Following their historic qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and a bronze medal finish at the previous WAFCON, the Copper Queens have grown in both experience and confidence.
But still, there has been no happiness for the Copper Queens in the recent past. A loss, then a draw, followed by another draw, and last played game a loss has put Zambia where it is now.
Nonetheless, led by newly appointed Swiss coach Nora Häuptle, the team is currently in Morocco preparing for the group stage. Zambia will face hosts Morocco on July 5, followed by matches against Senegal on July 9 and DR Congo on July 12.
This 5th-place continental ranking highlights Zambia’s a digit downward trajectory but still reinforces their status as a serious contender at WAFCON. However, with strong teams around them, every match will require full focus and discipline.
As the tournament kicks off, all eyes will be on the Copper Queens to see if they can match or even surpass their previous WAFCON success.
