Zambia recorded a fantastic and important start of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup hosted in the Republic of Korea. They beat frustrated Portugal by 2 – 1. Zambia played Portugal for the first game of Group C.
In a dangerous but goalless first half Zambia sustained waves of strikes from Portugal. A porous Zambian defence allowed the Portuguese dangerous advances. And a single mistake led to the first yellow card booking by the Zambian Captain Solomon Sakala.
But this was before Portugal got a first real chance in the 15th with Ribiero’s shot deflected. At the half hour mark Boyd Musonda gave away the ball cheaply but Mangani Banda sharply reacted and quickly got to the ball before Rubeiro could pounce on it.
Second half saw Edward Chilufya step up with the second goal when Enock Mwepu shot on target bounced straight to Edward’s near post position. In time Fashion Sakala found an opening hardly marked and his left shot was behind the net.
Portugal tried a real come back when Helder pulled one back but it was too late and the Portuguese managed to salvage only a goal. The Under 20 2017 African champions step to take the lead of Group C.
